Waste management beyond the most basic collection of rubbish is, in Africa, largely informal. There is a galaxy of pickers, collectors, resellers and middlemen between waste producers and the buyers of recuperated materials that is almost all informal. Many Accelerator Labs have independently come to the conclusion that any successful strategy to improve the circularity of Africa's economy goes through learning from, supporting and empowering informal waste workers, many of whom are women. While this board focuses on the African continent, the importance of the informal sector for a circular economy carries well beyond it. In 2024 the Accelerator Labs have produced a global publication dedicated to this matter: https://www.undp.org/acceleratorlabs/publications/circularity-informality-redefining-narratives .
