Innovation Solution Description
SECCCI supported cross- border coordination and cooperation to strengthen regional policy frameworks, structures and protocols by engaging local communities and different actors. The project is implemented by UNDP in partnership with the United Nations EnvironmenProgramme (UNEP) who brought expertise to support Governments in transboundary water management.
Qualitative Results of the Innovation
1. Increased cross-border cooperation: SECCCI has facilitated increased cooperation among border communities in Africa, leading to the development of joint initiatives and projects aimed at promoting social cohesion.
Quantitative result: According to a report by the European Union, SECCCI has facilitated the implementation of 22 cross-border projects, which have directly benefited over 3,000 people and indirectly impacted over 50,000 people in the border areas of Africa.
2. Improved access to social services: SECCCI has improved access to social services such as health, education, and water and sanitation facilities in border communities, leading to improved social cohesion.
Quantitative result: In Zambia, SECCCI has facilitated the construction of 18 boreholes, which have provided clean water to over 5,000 people. In addition, SECCCI has supported the construction of 8 schools in border areas, which have benefited over 1,500 students.
3. Enhanced peace and security: SECCCI has contributed to enhanced peace and security in border areas of Africa, leading to improved social cohesion.
Quantitative result: According to a report by the European Union, SECCCI has contributed to a 50% reduction in the number of border disputes and conflicts in the target areas.
4. Increased economic opportunities: SECCCI has facilitated increased economic opportunities in border areas of Africa, leading to improved social cohesion.
Quantitative result: In Tanzania, SECCCI has supported the establishment of 14 cross-border trade associations, which have enabled over 4,000 traders to access new markets and increase their incomes.
Quantitative Result of the Innovation
1. A study conducted by the African Development Bank found that cross-border initiatives in West Africa led to an increase in trade flows and economic growth in the region, which in turn led to a reduction in poverty and an improvement in living standards.
2. A study conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) found that cross-border initiatives in East Africa led to an increase in economic opportunities and a reduction in conflict and violence in the region.
3. A study conducted by the World Bank found that cross-border initiatives in Southern Africa led to an increase in trade flows and economic growth, which in turn led to a reduction in poverty and an improvement in living standards.
