Learnings on your challenge
What are the top key insights you generated about your learning challenge during this Action Learning Plan? (Please list a maximum of 5 key insights)
In an ideal setting, religious messaging holds the potential to enhance waste sorting efforts, potentially leading to a twofold increase in the amount of sorted waste collected. The following factors were key levers to effective religious messaging: presence of role models, regular frequency of messaging, tailored messaging, leveraging prior community knowledge, and reliable supporting infrastructure.
Considering the outcomes of this learning challenge, which of the following best describe the handover process? (Please select all that apply)
Our work has been picked up by UNDP or the government and has now expanded geographically in our country
Can you provide more detail on your handover process?
The report has been published and will be ceremonially handed over to the government partner in the coming months. Meanwhile, the UNDP Marine Debris Project is using these insights to inform the design and planning of future activities, including scaling.
Please paste any link(s) to blog(s) or publication(s) that articulate the learnings on your frontier challenge.
Data and Methods
Relating to your types of data, why did you chose these? What gaps in available data were these addressing?
On one hand, these are appropriate approaches to assess the effectiveness of faith-based waste management initiatives. At the same time, behavioural insights and randomised controled trials are novel methods of data collection for the Indonesia CO, and therefore this activity introduces innovative approaches to identifying gaps and opportunities to the CO.
The methods used, particularly behavioural approaches and randomized controlled trials, are novel methods of data collection in the Indonesia CO. On one hand, these are appropriate to assess the effectiveness of faith-based waste management initiatives; at the same time, this introduces a new method of identifying gaps and opportunities for the CO's programmatic pipeline design.
Why was it necessary to apply the above innovation method on your frontier challenge? How did these help you to unpack the system?
Yes, the RCT format was necessary as we were assessing whether or not the intervention was effective. Having defined control and treatment groups allowed for direct observation of the impact of religious messaging.

What sector does your partner belong to?
Civil Society
Please provide a brief description of the partnership.
Participate is a development consulting firm specializing in participatory approach in their social change practices. The role of Participate in this project is as an implementing partner of the Behavioural Study for the Indonesian Interfaith Waste Charity Movement.
Is this a new and unusual partner for UNDP?
Yes
Please indicate what partners you have actually worked with for this learning challenge.
Please state the name of the partner:
National Coordination Team for Marine Waste Management (TKN PSL)
What sector does your partner belong to?
Government (&related)
Please provide a brief description of the partnership.
TKN PSL is an Indonesian government’s task force to provide strategic directions for Indonesia’s government agencies and foster cross-sector collaborations in tackling the marine waste issues over an 8-year period (2018-2025). TKN PSL is the implementing body of the GRADASI project.
Is this a new and unusual partner for UNDP?
No

Bonus question: How did the interplay of innovation methods, new forms of data and unusual partners enable you to learn & generate insights, that otherwise you would have not been able to achieve?
Conducting mixed-methods research to assess the effectiveness of religious messaging for waste sorting provides insights that could be used to assess the effectiveness of a UNDP-supported initiative and opens the door to further pipeline development surrounding waste management. Furthermore, the Lab has greater freedom to conduct this kind of exploration compared to CO projects, which may be limited in the scope of activities they are able to do.
Please upload any further supporting evidence / documents / data you have produced on your frontier challenge that showcase your learnings.
