Learnings on your challenge
What are the top key insights you generated about your learning challenge during this Action Learning Plan? (Please list a maximum of 5 key insights)
1. In the area where we did our initial research (West and East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia), the nexus between climate change and conflict hinges upon the availability of water resources. Water is very important for local crop production, so social conflicts may arise over drought and the lack of access to water.
2. Decrease in economic output as a result of drought and other climate-related factors may drive local citizens to fight for their livelihoods. This effort has numerous and often-intertwined implications, ranging from community-level conflicts, migration to find employment in other parts of the country or overseas, drugs use, gender-based violence, and other issues.
3. Although climate change makes these communities increasingly vulnerable to human security issues, the conflicts that have currently arisen as a result of climate-related factors are able to be resolved using local and informal mechanisms.
Considering the outcomes of this learning challenge, which of the following best describe the handover process? (Please select all that apply)
Our work has not yet scaled
Can you provide more detail on your handover process?
The findings from this research have been presented at the ASEAN-UN climate, peace and security regional dialogue (AURED) in November 2024. There are similar research projects being conducted in parallel by other UNDP country offices in Southeast Asia. As such, the regional hub has committed to exploring further activities and initiatives related to this topic.

Data and Methods
Relating to your types of data, why did you chose these? What gaps in available data were these addressing?
Climate patterns data from national databases were used to identify pilot locations for the research. In turn, qualitative data gathered from the field was used to capture the human stories regarding the potential connections between climate change and conflicts.
Why was it necessary to apply the above innovation method on your frontier challenge? How did these help you to unpack the system?
There has not been any significant effort exploring the link between climate change and conflict. As such, we need to incorporate future analysis through integrating datasets related to climate patterns and field findings on human insecurity/social conflicts to establish whether such link exists.
Partners
Please indicate what partners you have actually worked with for this learning challenge.
Please state the name of the partner:
Political Psychology Laboratory, University of Indonesia
What sector does your partner belong to?
Academia
Please provide a brief description of the partnership.
Two ICs were procured who were both members of the Political Psychology Laboratory of the University of Indonesia. One IC served as the Technical Expert on Social Conflict while the other was the Senior Specialist on Data Analysis.
Is this a new and unusual partner for UNDP?
Yes

Please state the name of the partner:
Yayasan Generasi Hijau Indonesia
What sector does your partner belong to?
Academia
Please provide a brief description of the partnership.
Yayasan Generasi Hijau Indonesia released a consultant who joined this project as the Technical Expert on Climate Change. Together with the Technical Expert on Social Conflict, this consultant contributed to the climate dimension of the project.
Is this a new and unusual partner for UNDP?
Yes

Bonus question: How did the interplay of innovation methods, new forms of data and unusual partners enable you to learn & generate insights, that otherwise you would have not been able to achieve?
This project came at a time where there was a push for further collaboration within different programmatic units within the UNDP Indonesia Country Office. The use of innovative methods in this research allowed for the generation of insights that the CO (and to some extent, the region) would have limited capacity to generate otherwise, and opens the door to new pathways and potential long-term projects.
Please upload any further supporting evidence / documents / data you have produced on your frontier challenge that showcase your learnings.
