DESCRIPTION: What did you observe, or what did people write or say?
While I was a university student, I got in touch with many students activities, one of them was Enactus, with whom I'm still in touch till now. They do some sustainable projects with which they compete every year. This year's project is tackling an important topic which is Children's Malnutrition, especially in poor areas like Upper Egypt. They make "Baby Steps", high-nutrition baby food that is made of 100% Egyptian ingredient based on Barley to offer kids all the elements they need through a high quality and very affordable purée.
NEED: What need does this answer?
This acts a substitute for baby food products like Cerelac, that are inaccessible for those people due to their lack of affordability. It'll be based on food they already grow, 100% local, so affordable for them. They're going to teach them how to make such products, and help them sell their products abroad.
INSIGHTS: What lessons can be learned from this observation?
Natural surroundings have it all, and sometimes things you're excellent at (In this case agriculture), if used out side the box, can answer to real needs and create sustainable economic income. They also teach us as UNDP, the importance of partnerships with different entities, and to get outside the box us as well, not just famous NGOS and government have access to real needs and creative solutions, but also could be students activities, led by the Youth at universities.
