DESCRIPTION: What did you observe, or what did people write or say?
In most Cameroonian cities, moto taxis have started using modified umbrellas to protect themselves and their customers from heavy rainfalls. Those "improved" umbrellas are manufactured by local craftsmen from umbrellas purchased in shops. Modifications include : a larger and rectangular umbrella to protect customers and a mechanism to fit the umbrella to the motorbike. When rain starts, those "waterproof" moto taxis have more customers than their "normal" counterparts and can compete with traditional car taxis.

NEED: What need does this answer?
In most Cameronian towns, informal moto taxis represent the bulk of transport means. They are a cheaper alternative to traditional taxis operated with yellow cars. Beyond costs, they also go to remote areas, where traditional transportation means do not dare to venture out. If they were to stop their operations, business and professional life in Douala and Yaounde would pause. Yet, customers and drivers suffer from heavy rainfalls given our equatorial climate (more than 4 meters of rainfalls annually). Adaptated umbrellas therefore allow moto taxis to continue their operations 24/7 and cities to thrive.
INSIGHTS: What lessons can be learned from this observation?
First of all, competitive adaptability from moto taxis. In rainy conditions, car taxis had a comfort advantage, over them. With that innovation, they maintain their price advance. Secondly, frugal innovation. As those "modified" umbrellas and their attachments are done with few parts and a lot of skills. Finally, it is a good example of a high social yield invention, which with limited investments brings greater good and allows transportations to work in Cameroonian cities 24/7.
